Our practice
We are a small architectural design practice located in rural East Devon, a few miles from the border with West Dorset and the historic town of Lyme Regis.
We are fascinated by buildings of all kinds—their history, how they were built, and how they are used. Every building has a story, and we aim to help our clients write their own chapter.
Not architects?
No. We are architectural technologists. This is important to note because we believe that architectural technologists approach building design a little differently.
Not many people have come across the title, which means we are often mistaken for, and called, architects. We are proud of the title, and the practice of architectural technology, so it is understandable that we make a huge effort to let everyone we work with know that we are architectural technologists.
The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists defines the discipline like this.
Architectural technology focuses on the form, function, and performance of the building. A future-focused discipline, it is essential when ensuring newly built projects are sustainably constructed, and existing ones are conserved, maintained, or retrofitted. It lives where architecture meets engineering, science, and technology – Architectural Technology is at the heart of it all.
Architectural technologists are a varied bunch and can be found working in many areas of the built environment; many lead their own architectural practices, some work within design practices, others for local authorities, or on construction sites - in fact in pretty much every organisation where people design, construct, and maintain buildings.
As a practice, Porter Haworth is an affiliate member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists and are working towards full chartered membership.
